Arc Resistant Switchgear Seminar:
In January 2009, PACS sponsored and ran a seminar at a hotel, near LaGuardia Airport in New York City. The purpose of this seminar was to review the relatively new requirements and construction techniques for Arc Resistant switchgear. Admission was by invitation and the seminar lasted from 9AM to about 4PM and lunch was included.
The attendees were engineers from local consultants and Authorities such as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who are responsible for all the airports in the New York area, as well as bridges and tunnels crossing the Hudson River from New Jersey into New York. Engineers from the Metro North Railroad and the New York Power Authority attended. as well as engineers from Brookhaven Nationl Laboratories. In all there were about 85 well qualified engineers. The house was actually sold out.
The seminar included a Power Point session which also included videos of actual accident scenes of non-Arc Resistant switchgear, as well as pass-fail videos of Arc Resistant tests at the KEMA laboratories. It included a complete discussion on IEEE C37.20.7 specifications and an explanation of Type 1 & Type 2 (Suffix B, C & D) construction and application. There was a further review of OSHA and NFPA 70E requirements and typical calculations safe Flash Boundaries and PPE.
